Good morning!
With the Car Show behind us the next big event at church is our Romans Road Trip VBS, which is just around the corner. VBS is every evening from July 6 through July 10 from 6:30 -8:3o. There are all sorts of ways that you can help out at VBS, and we are in great need of volunteers (even if you can’t be there every night). There is a signup sheet in the lobby, and if you have any questions you can see Elizabeth Barrett.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night of VBS week I will be leading an adult class in the sanctuary from 7-8(ish).** This year I will be teaching on a topic that is juuuuuussssst a bit different! We are going to be looking at the passages of Scripture that deal with the Nephilim and other giants of the Bible.
Few subjects in Scripture generate more curiosity than the Nephilim mentioned in Genesis 6 and Numbers 13. Of all the topics that people have asked me about over the years this one is near the top of the list. Were they ordinary humans? Were they supernatural beings? How should Christians understand these passages? During these three nights we will be studying the relevant passages regarding giants (Yes, Goliath will make an appearance) and seeing how they connect to each other.
So why did I pick this topic? After all, it’s not one that I would start a conversation about faith with someone else. But it is a topic that someone else might start a conversation about faith with!
So our goals for this three-night study are twofold:
1. To be able to give (as Peter commands is in 1 Peter 3:15) a “ready defense” when folks ask about some of the stranger things we read about in the Scriptures.
2. To see how the stories regarding the giants of the Bible point us to the reality of sin, the need for a Savior, and the power of God to save.
I am looking forward to these 3 studies. Come ready to discuss, bring your questions, and invite a friend!
Here’s what’s happening:
1. TONIGHT – Youth Group meets at the church at 6:30 pm.
2. SUNDAY – Youth Fellowship Meal after the worship service.
3. SUNDAY – There will be a brief meeting after the worship service for anyone who would like to provide feedback on the car show.
4. We are on our annual summer break for Sunday School. There is a signup sheet in the lobby to provide a snack before the service during July and August.
5. July 12 – Double Nickels luncheon after the worship service.
6. Save the Date: 8/29 – Youth Missions Project with Good Neighbors.
7. Save the Date: 8/30 – Baptism Service at the Hoover Pond in the evening.
We are concluding our sermon series on the life of Joseph this Sunday! The book of Genesis famously begins with life in a garden but it ends with a coffin in Egypt. Joseph's final words to his family points to God's redemption and a future deliverer. We'll see how a seemingly anticlimactic ending to Genesis gives us four foundation truths about our faith and is actually pointing us to Jesus! The message will include a strong invitation to receive Jesus. Invite someone to join you at the Bridge.
See you on Sunday,
Scott
**Our family will be on vacation from July 9-15. We booked the vacation before the VBS dates were set. It won’t happen again!
